P.O.D. – Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years
Los grandes éxitos, los momentos claves y los más débiles, novedades y primicias; todo un conjunto de elementos que nos adentran en la historia de una de los momentos más relevantes de esta banda de San Diego.
Después del anuncio publico que P.O.D. se alejaba de su compañía Atlantic Records, no paso mucho tiempo para que se anunciara el lanzamiento de un disco que recopilaba los grandes éxitos de la banda bajo el amparo de la compañía que dejaba. Curiosamente, es Rhino Records la responsable de esta recopilación, una retrospectiva musical que se remonta al año 1999 cuando P.O.D. debuta con The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, y que se extiende hasta Testify; un trayecto de 6 años que tubo como protagonista a una de la bandas más sobresalientes del medio y que, si embargo, también vio como esa popularidad se asfixiaba con producciones que nunca pudieron superar al súper ventas de Satellite.
Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years es el primer disco de grandes éxitos de la banda, pero solo se limita a sus seis años con Atlantic Records, por lo que otros hits anteriores a esta época, difícilmente se podrán encontrar. Pero para muchos, la historia de esta gran banda empieza en 1999, año durante el cual lanzan The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, un disco que inmediatamente salta a la palestra con un cover conflictivo que ayudo a crear una interesante incógnita sobre la banda. Su explosivo éxito se plasma a través de canciones como ?Southtown?, pista que abre el disco, más ?Rock The Party (Off The Hook)? y ?Set Your Eyes To Sion?. Este fue el primer paso hacia un inesperado éxito que explota con Satellite, disco de 2001 que les masifico en todo el mundo. Nadie pudo resistirse a sus grandes y memorables éxitos que pegaron fuerte en radios y cadenas de televisión por un extenso tiempo.
Satellite fue, indiscutiblemente, un fenómeno sin precedentes y prueba de ello son las feroces canciones como ?Boom?, ?Alive?, ?Youth Of The Nation? y ?Satellite?. Hasta ese instante, parecía que nada ni nadie podía detener a P.O.D., sin embargo, empiezan a surgir los primeros problemas; Marcos Curiel abandona la agrupación, y en su lugar llega Jason Truby, quién hace su primera aparición junto a la banda interpretando el tema del film The Matrix Reloaded.
Indiscutiblemente, aquí empieza una nueva etapa para P.O.D.. Payable on Death se lanza en 2003 con la nueva alineación; un disco que paso casi desapercibido, y que no pudo desenchufarse de la sombra de Marcos. De este disco salen las canciones ?Execute The Sounds? y ?I Will?, éxitos que no alcanzaron la envergadura ni el sitial de hit. Testify fue su último trabajo de estudio, una producción que intenta retomar sus raíces en medio de un momento musical post-rapcore que dejaba en el olvido el estilo y personalidad de la banda. De este trabajo emergen ?Roots in Stereo?, ?Light Outs? y ?Goodbye for Now?.
Cuatro discos son fiel testimonio de un fenómeno que fue testigo de un éxito explosivo, pero también, de un momento de bastante altibajo. Para muchos, un antes y un después de la salida de Marcos Curiel, y puede que ese razonar este entre las disyuntivas de la banda, que les lleva a un nuevo capítulo en su historia después del lanzamiento de Testify; la salida de Truby y el retorno de Marcos.
Pero Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Years incluye otras pistas que permiten agregar algo exclusivo, novedoso e incluso nuevo. ?Going In Blind? es una pista completamente nueva, que nace para esta recopilación, y en la cual aún se encuentra Truby como parte de su despedida de la banda. Luego encontramos la canción ?Sleeping Awake?, la cual fue parte de la banda sonora de The Matrix Reloaded. ?Truly Amazing? fue parte de otro gran éxito cinematográfico, en esta ocasión parte del álbum The Passion of The Christ, la conmovedora versión de los últimos días de Cristo dirigida por Mel Gibson.
En medio de sus cuatro discos, P.O.D. lanza el segundo volumen de un EP que ya había editado previamente antes de ser parte de Atlantic Records. Se trata de la canción ?If The Wasn?t For You?, una de la canciones incluidas en The Warriors Ep. Vol.2.
Finalizando con las novedades, se adhiere una composición que fue parte de las secciones de Testify pero que no fue parte del resultado final de este disco; se trata de ?Here We Go?.
En resumen, este trabajo muestra los mejores y mas débiles momentos de una de las bandas más grandes del medio. Sin querer etiquetarse con el adjetivo de ?banda cristiana?, P.O.D. supo llevar un mensaje lleno de esperanza y vida a un medio que no pudo resistirse al fenómeno. Aun las abundantes críticas que llegaban desde el medio cristiano, ellos supieron sobreponerse e incluso causar un gran impacto entre quienes le criticaban.
Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Year es parte de la historia. 17 pistas que nos muestran que P.O.D. aun no es parte de la historia, y la canción ?Going in Blind? es un positivo reflejo de que ellos aun tienen la esencia que mostró Satellite. Como productor final, este es un gran álbum que incluye, junto con el audio, una muy buena presentación que se aprecia en el inserto del disco, dentro del cual se adhiere un interesante texto escrito por Mark Joseph, autor del libro Faith, God & Rock ?N? Roll, y en el cual se detalla el significado del impacto de la banda en medio de nuestra actual cultura.
Greatest Hits: The Atlantic Year es una colección estupenda, obligada para todo fiel admirador de la banda, así como para todo amante del buen rock. Eso si, se extraña la posibilidad de haber agregado un plus con un DVD que incluyera los video clips que, también, fueron parte del suceso de la banda. Aún lo anterior, este es un disco que es parte de la historia y que presagia que esta historia aun no tiene fin.
