Two highly-sought after vintage drum kits were chosen by Abbey Road and Native Instruments sound engineers to give two highly distinctive 70s drum sounds.
The Open Kit is a Ludwig? Vistalite Tequila Sunrise from 1972 with a 26" kick drum, 14" rack tom and 16" and 18" floor toms. Recorded in the legendary Studio Two of Abbey Road, this kit provides the big roomy sound immortalized on countless classic rock recordings.
The Tight Kit is a vintage 1970s Premier model with 22" kick drum, 13" rack tom, 14" and 16" floor toms. The samples from this kit were also recorded in Studio Two of Abbey Road, but dedicated acoustic panels were put around the kit to achieve the tight, punchy and dry sound that was very popular throughout the 70s.

Two outstanding kits that helped define the sound of the 1980s were chosen by Abbey Road and Native Instruments sound engineers to form the basis of this KOMPLETE Instrument.
The Black Kit, recorded in Studio Three, is a vintage Yamaha 9000 from the mid 80s. In its time, the 9000 was a ground breaking design and became wildly popular – subsequently earning a reputation as one of the most recorded drum kits in history.
The Chrome Kit is a Slingerland Magnum fitted with single-headed concert toms. The concert tom concept was very fashionable during the decade and Magnum series was the manufacturer’s top of the line range in the 1980s.
The snare drums used include Ludwig, Gretsch, Slingerland and Pearl models. And of course, no 1980s drum kit would be complete without a full set of Octobans – melodically tuned tubular toms that were popular among many of the decade?s top drummers.

Two top-of-the-line drum kits were thoroughly recorded: a Drum Workshop Collector?s Series from the mid 90s as well as a Pearl Reference kit from the mid 00s. Drum Workshop (DW) are well known for their exceptionally high standards and innovative direction in the art of making drums. This maple Collector?s Series kit recorded in Studio Two, which we call the ‘White Kit’, is the best from this flagship line of custom made American drums. Pearl is a name synonymous with rock & roll since the 60s. The Reference kit recorded in Studio Three, otherwise known as the ‘Sparkle Kit’, debuted on the market in 2005 and is still the highest quality commercially available kit in Pearl?s current range.
Every care has been made to ensure the most accurate recordings possible, preserving the true character of the original drums. The DW kit was tuned with a slightly ?rockier? sound in mind than the more ?poppy? sounding Pearl kit, but remember there are no rules!
